Short answer: it starts with a private consultation and screening. On the day, a topical anaesthetic goes on for about 20 minutes, then the probe delivers focused ultrasound for roughly 20–25 minutes. Most people describe brief, warm "ticks" around 3–4/10 — not pain. There's no downtime: you go straight back to your day, with sex best left for 48–72 hours. Plan about an hour at the clinic in total.
Before you come: the consultation
The first step is never the machine — it's a conversation. At the consultation we talk through what's bothering you, take a brief history, screen for anything that would mean deferring or referring, and set honest expectations about what HIFU can and can't do. You'll get a clear plan and a written quote, with no pressure to decide on the spot. A few practical things help: schedule for the week after your period (treatment is deferred during menstruation), mention any medications or health conditions, and bring your questions. If you're still deciding whether it's for you, our guide on who's a good candidate is a useful read first.
The day itself, step by step
Arrival and settling. You're seen one patient at a time, in a private room — no shared waiting area. We confirm your plan and answer any last questions.
Numbing (about 20 minutes). A topical anaesthetic is applied and given time to work, so the treatment itself is comfortable. This is the part that takes the "waiting," and it's a good moment to relax.
The treatment (about 20–25 minutes). The intravaginal probe delivers focused ultrasound at set depths — typically 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm — in short, methodical passes. You'll feel brief, warm "ticks" as each point is delivered. We work at your pace and pause any time you ask.
Done. That's it — no bandages, no recovery room. You get dressed and go.
What it actually feels like
This is the question almost everyone asks, so here's the honest version: with the anaesthetic, most patients rate the sensation around 3–4 out of 10 — a series of brief, warm pulses rather than anything sharp. Some zones are a little more sensitive than others and can peak slightly higher for a moment, but it passes immediately. It is not a procedure people describe as painful, and there's nothing to brace for.
Right after, and the days that follow
Because the surface is never broken, there's no downtime. You can drive yourself home and carry on with your day. In the first 24 hours it's normal to notice mild warmth, slight tenderness on touch, or a little light spotting — all of which settle on their own. The main comfort guideline is to leave sexual activity for about 48–72 hours. Exercise, work and normal routines are fine straight away. For the full day-by-day, see our vaginal HIFU recovery guide. When you'll see results
HIFU works through your own collagen response, so nothing changes overnight. The firming develops gradually over 6–8 weeks and continues to build for a couple of months, with many patients (and partners) noticing the change between weeks 4 and 8. Results are moderate and gradual — and if a single session doesn't fully meet your goal, an optional second pass at 6–12 weeks can be added.
